Project Description

With support from the M-Pesa Foundation, Watamu Dispensary — a Ministry of Health facility serving Watamu and its surrounding rural communities — gained a dedicated maternity unit, replacing a single delivery room with a modern, purpose-built space for prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. Plateau Consultants was appointed as project manager and led the initiative end-to-end: conducting the site visit and stakeholder needs assessment, translating community and health-worker input into a full design and bill of quantities, preparing tender documentation, and overseeing contractor selection and construction supervision through to completion.

The design reflected Plateau's close attention to how the facility would function day to day — reception, consultation and triage rooms, a delivery suite, sterilization and sluice areas, a nurse station, postnatal care, and a Neonatal Care Unit for vulnerable newborns, all laid out with secure access, clear staff sightlines, and a calm, welcoming atmosphere for mothers and families. By pairing rigorous project management — inception planning, progress reporting, quality assurance, and risk mitigation — with a design built around patient wellbeing and staff efficiency, Plateau Consultants delivered a facility that meaningfully expanded safe, accessible maternal healthcare for the Watamu community.
