Project Breakdown

With a Kshs 40,000,000 grant from the M-Pesa Foundation, Plateau Consultants designed and is managing the upgrading of Masaku School for Physically Disabled, a public institution near Machakos Town that has served special-needs learners since 1979 and currently enrolls 176 pupils. Following a site assessment and stakeholder consultations, the project addresses critical gaps in accommodation, learning facilities, and accessibility identified through community and beneficiary input.

The design scope included two 100-bed dormitories, a fully equipped computer laboratory with workstations, an integrated science laboratory for biology, chemistry, and physics, shaded walkways, a physiotherapy room, mobility devices such as wheelchairs and crutches, and a 3-acre chain-link security fence. Every element was designed with accessibility and inclusivity at its core — from ramped entrances at all dormitory doors to burglar-proofed, well-ventilated learning spaces — reflecting close collaboration between the project team, local stakeholders, and architects.
